A 4:3 "NxM" setting (without the "stretched") on the laptop should
result in black bars on the sides...at least it does so on mine. Then,
turn mirroring on. I don't have a projector with which to try this, but
it works going to an old 1024x768 LCD monitor that dates back to my B&W
G3.
