Yes, you must run one of the major operating systems like FreeBSD. ;-)

I believe some people who tried it also fried their Mac Pro PSUs, which
simply aren't powerful enough to run modern graphics hardware.

Yes, we are interested in creating software for Mac OS X users so we
recently got our first Mac. We studied the specs and decided that the Mac
Pro is a complete waste of money for exactly the same reason. So we just
got a Mac Mini instead: cheap machine that also has poor graphics.
This means the difference between us pioneering new software for Mac OS X
and just doing legacy ****ts. Shame.
