I'm not aware of one that adds this function to Workbench itself
however there are a couple of other options:

Image2Icon (freeware):

This creates thumbnail icons for images which will then show up in
Workbench's normal icon view.

There are a number of stand-alone thumbnail utilities available (which
show thumbnails in their own window) two good ones are:
Photoalbum (shareware):
