I'd like to give you a little advice, but you need to understand this
is a very vague question your asking. The best thing I can offer is "it
all depends on the application", check with the software mfg's for
their recommendations first. As for my personal choices on this, I
would definitely go with a dual Opteron system instead of a bunch of
slower render boxes. You'll create less network traffic and most
im****tantly, less administrative work for yourself. In terms of why AMD
is slower clock speed, just keep in mind that AMD is 64-bit and Intel
is 32-bit. Plus AMD has an integrated memory controller and Intel has
to "go out on the motherboard to do this - ie: latency". So, slower
clock speed does "not" necessarily mean a slower CPU. If you go with
AMD and the app/OS sup****ts 64-bit, then you will complete twice the
work in the same CPU clock cycle as with an Intel ... some food for
thought! This is why AMD has taken the model number game to be
equivalent to Intel even though their CPU clock speeds are
substantially less.
I like dual AMD (Tyan has quad board worth checking into as well), 2GB
RAM, and 2 or more SATA drives (probably 160GB+ Seagate). And most
im****tantly, put more money and emphasis on your graphics card &
motherboard chipset than the CPU. I like the Nvidia GeForce 6800GT
256MB as the best bang for the buck! Its really going to come down to
application & operating system sup****t. I'm repeating myself, cause
this is ultimately what you need to be looking for. CPU tech info
confuses people and sometimes putting more money in the wrong area is a
waste if you know what I mean! What about getting a slower CPU and more
RAM! Plus that Nvidia graphics card, and if you have money left over,
get a good optical mouse (like the Logitech MX510 that does "not" use
batteries!) and good monitor. The way I look at it, if I see or touch
something, then I don't scrimp.
Good Luck
