Thanks.  tifftopnm+pamscale+convert worked for the smaller size, but
the larger size is still no go.  If I convert the original big TIFF to
PPM, even though the image size is 1/4 (half the width and height),
the file size is about the same since PPM is such a puffy format.
convert seg faults on it, and ppmtogif runs out of memory, so still
stuck on that one.  A bz2 of the PPM is 40MB so it's too big to
download over my slow dialup before I get kicked off (max 4 hours one
session).  Argh.
