Laptop Purchase: Soft Fire GL a 9700, 256 (RivaTuner) or True Fire GL T2, 128

by robox@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (OXO Cube) May 28, 2004 at 05:14 AM

Please, could I get some solid feedback on this issue that I am
loosing sleep over.

Are there any professional laptop users or alike willing to
competently advise me?

-=THE QUESTIONS=-

Should I Soft Mod an ATI MOBILITY 9700 PRO, 256Mb to a FIRE GL X1,
or buy a Legitimate ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2, 128Mb?

Are there professionals out there successfully using high end software
with the ATI (MOBILITY) 9700 RivaTuner/Soft Fire GL software?

I am in the market to purchase a laptop for High end CAD and 3D
animation and rendering.
****tability is a necessity for me , yet there are so few laptops
available with high end professional graphics cards. Gaming is not of
any relevance to me.

Does the SOFT FIRE GL option really transform the 9700 into such a
beast as the X1 for real? With system stability and trouble free use
once set up correctly? Or, would I be in for a whole bunch of
instability and incompatibility issues as evident with the 9700
PROper?

-=POTENTIAL GRAPHICS PROGRAMS FOR USE=-
AW MAYA 5
AW STUDIO TOOLS 10 & 11
PRO-E WILDFIRE
SOLIDWORKS 2003
3D STUDIO MAX
LIGHTWAVE
XSI 2 (softImage)
HOUDINI
COMBUSTION
FLAME
ADOBE AFTER FX
BRYCE
ADOBE SUITES
MACROMEDIA SUITES
QUARK XPRESS
etc, etc.

I have my eyes on an "HP COMPAQ EVO NW8000", 15" UXGA, 1.7GHz
Centrino, 1GB (333DDR) - Max 2GB, 7200rpm ATA100, ATI FIRE GL T2,
128Mb card. However, I do not like buying from these big
Multi-nationals that make modification pass-times a nightmare of
warranty voidance and inflated pricing.

My preference is to go with a generic "Clevo D870P" (Sager/Acer) with
the 17" WXGA or WSXGA wide screen, 3.2/3.4GHz, 7200rpm HDD - RAID 0 &
1 capable, 1GB (400DDR) - Max 1GB, ATI MOBILITY 9700 PRO.
(although the P4's do get hot under the hood).

Any contributions will be gratefully recieved.

Many Thanks,

R. (AKA: OXO Cube)
