How to select unsharp areas in a picture

I have taken several shots of the same motive each with a different
plane of focus (I used a tripod).
In Photoshop CS3 I have taken the resulting pictures and put them in
different layers and aligned the pictures. Now I would like to mask
the unsharp image areas on each layer in order to get a composit
picture of all the sharp areas in all the layers.
Is there a way to select or mask everyting on a layer that is unsharp?
