You really don't have to "join" to use a free photo hosting service
like Flickr, Photobucket, or the many others that exist. You do have
to register, but that's harmless. Even the services that will send
you the occasional email (like Smilebox) give you the choice to "opt
out" of future mailings.
Most will allow you to upload only .jpgs. You can crop your .jpg to,
say, 650 px by (x) px at 72dpi and the size will be acceptable.
