Rats! Sorry, I forgot about SCSI. Mine's a slightly newer beige G3, so
it uses the IDE / ATA system and I can happily plug drives in and out.
Unfortunately you won't be able to simply swap the drive over. :o(
You would need some sort of adaptor:
- a PCI SCSI card (including internal connectors) for
the PowerMac G4. The bonus here is that being on a
separate SCSI BUS there shouldn't be any problems
with "dip switch" settings.
or - a PCI ATA card for the PowerMac 8500, which would
allow you to plug one of the G4's hard drives in to
transfer files, (although the 8500 may not like large
hard drives, more than 128GB)
or - and external hard drive case that accepts a SCSI drive
and plugs into either the USB or FireWire, but these
may be difficult to find.
Another option might be adding a PCI USB card to the PowerMac 8500 to
allow you to plug in an external USB drive or Flash keyring drive ...
but you'd need to make sure it will work with the older PCI system.
If you've got a fast Internet connection I'd probably go with simply
emailing the files to yourself from the 8500 and collecting the email
on the G4. That's the easiest and cheapest appraoch, if not perhaps the
fastest. You can download a Zip archiving applications from
http://www.MacOrchard.com
to compress the files to a smaller size. (Mac
OS X on the G4 has a Zip application built-in to the operating system.)
