You shouldn't need the extension, even in Windows. But as already
mentioned you should use file>open to get those files opened.
You say ID doesn't recognize the files. What does that mean? If it means
that it doesn't see the files from a file>open command, just change the
view of the files to all files and ID will see all the files in the
selected folder.
Select the PM file and it should open.
Don't expect miracles here. You'll have everything you need to work with
but ID handles text much differently than PM so you're going to be
looking at a good deal of tweaking. Text wrap is also handled
differently so watch out for that, too.
For graphics, make sure that everything in the PM file is linked. ID
won't convert embedded graphics. You'll only get low res proxy images
with missing links.
