Well this has morphed into "Hello we are still here"
and that's OK, but off topic, and mostly my fault.

In terms of the original poster's issue,
I think the best solution is to trade in the parallel ****t dongle for a
USB 
dongle.

That is what I did and I've never been sorry.
It makes it much easier to move the dongle between computers.
