You using 9.2 or 9.3?

9.2 requires a complex backface/air polygon setup. 9.3 doesn't. If you 
are using 9.2 and haven't set up backface/air polygons your absorption 
will be far higher than you expect and your object will appear black.

Just a guess, but if you're using 9.3 that won't happen...
