Sometimes you have to think visually rather than how the mechanics of
the software work to achieve a certain effect.
Sketch out what your wanting to do perhaps to see op****tunities for
slight of hand when needed. One thing to consider is not try to do this
with just one object. Morph your ball to your flat shape, save out that
end morph as another object, then use object dissolve to the non-morphed
object. Try cloth dynamics on that object instead.
Your mileage may vary, but a starting point anyway.
