Is the scheme of weighted-averaging essentially over the entire dataset 
with an arbitrary norm typical? Any particular reason why it was chosen 
rather than splines or some such? Just curious. Any particular name that I

should google for to learn more about the strengths / weaknesses of this 
technique?
