Could you provide an example plot that show this behavior?
I have never seen any vector plot options cause a noticeable difference
in x11 response.  One could test this hypothesis by compiling gnuplot_x11
with or without "#define X11_POLYLINE" to see if disabling the polyline
optimization slows down the plot equivalently even without variable rgb.

I wonder if the speed difference could be due to processing an extra
column in the input file rather than anything to do with the x11 display.
Is it a large data file?  Or maybe it's just a question of the 
particular graphics card or X server.
