Thanks Ethan. Yes, I didn't mean to imply that. With its fairly large
userbase I'm be confident gnuplot is OK and my config / installation is
suspect.

Definately. Am trying hard! :)

I'll give that a shot. But svg does not seem very "hardcopy" oriented. I
had the impression this was a vector format more suited to web-display.
Or not?

My bad. Let me explain the situation now that I've done a thorough
testing to reproduce the exact errors:

http://tinyurl.com/4k2fw3

Apparantly I had the typo (Helvitica instead of the correct HelvEtica)
all throughout my hundereds of scripts (damn!). Glad you spotted that
Ethan. Why did gnuplot never complain? But the fonts rendered were always
OK so I never noticed.

Now I tested six cases (eps vs pdf and Times vs Helvitica vs HelvEtica ).
I've again posted the images online: The gist is that all the eps
terminal images look good whereas all the pdf terminal images look bad.

So I find it hard to believe its a font problem. What do you guys think?

Question: How do I find the "size" of my eps terminal. Ethan earlier used

size 5in,3.5in for his pdf terminal. I don't know how to find what the
corresponding setting was for my eps terminal. Maybe that's the key?

I'd appreciate any other sugesstions / tests people might recommend.
