No, it doesn't.  gnuplot didn't compute data with verticals.  Plotting 
them as such would be a lie.

Of course there is interpolation!  How else did you think could contour 
lines be placed, even when the contour value is never contained anywhere 
in the data?

I'm afraid you have the wrong idea of what a "correct contour plot" is.
