Fill a layer with transparency

[Gimp-2.4.5 / OpenSuse-10.3]

Hello,

is there a way to fill a layer with transparency?

One can easily drag a color from the color selector
to a layer to fill the whole layer with this color.
I'm looking for the same sort of thing but with
transparency instead of a color.
