The answer has to be......depends on the image size.
There is a fxfoundry script
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimpfx-foundry/
that adds an adjustable text watermark egger-copyright.scm - works very
well.
Another way that would work with a logo or text.

I would also consider creating your logo in a vector drawing application
such as Inkscape. Then you can easily scale it to suit the photograph.
