Letter alignment

Hi there,

I would like to put all common character from a font on a relative
small bitmap; in perfect aligned columns, but spacing the letters with
tab leaves to much space between them... i tried the transformation
tool but it takes the whole layer for new coordinates ;  for example i
would like to move each letter from exact 100 pixels to the left,
what's the easiest way to do it ?

Else, i could use ImageMagic, and glue many small images together.
