Several Gimp questions.

by Thomas Troeger <thomas.troeger.ext@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 25, 2008 at 05:13 PM

Hi,

I've been using GIMP for a long time now and there are work steps I
regularly think should be simpler. I am not sure maybe I've just not
discovered some features, so maybe someone here can enlighten me:

- I regularly have to copy a layer mask from one layer to the other.
Currently the fastest method I have found is go to the source layer, do
`mask to selection', then go to the target layer and add a layer mask
`from selection'. Is there an easier method? Why can I only have one
layer mask per layer? Sometimes it would be handy to have 2 or 3...

- I have written a small program that morphs a texture from one shape to
the other, but it is rather complicated and involves 3 images where two
hold the source and destination shape and one the texture. I know that
in Photoshop there is something like a layer morph thing, but Idon't
have Photoshop. Is there a plugin or filter where you can define two
regions and then use this morph on a layer? That would be nifty. I've
started writing a plugin for this, but lack of time has prevented me to
finish it since more than a year. Additionally, writing a really good
plugin isn't that easy and I have no knowledge of GTK ...

- I don't really understand why there is transparency in 3 possible
areas, namely the layer mask, then each pixel can have a transparent
component, and then there is the global alpha layer. Can someone explain
the rationale why this is like that? I figure at least the global alpha
mask could be avoided, I've never used it and I start to wonder what is
it's purpose. Surely is must have some use -- but which?

Cheers,
Thomas.
