Re-mapping colours using GIMP?

Some time ago some one asked if this could be done in
GIMP:

Some one else came up with answer and I saved it for later use.
I tried it out this week and also found this:
http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SampleToning/

Nice feature but as far as I understand not the same thing
demonstrated on the first web-page above.

Am I missing something here?
How do I achieve what shown for PS with GIMP?
