Gimp prides itself on being in little bits all over your desktop.  You can
expand your editing window to be fullscreen, then the image is still tiny.

Then you zoom the image.

To insert a layer, use the Layers Menu.

There are online tutorials for those coming across from Photoshop.  I
recently bought "GIMP 2 for Photographers" available on Amazon.com.

Amazon have just told me that for that reason, they think that I might
like
the latest Harry Potter book.  Personally, I can't see the connection.  I
must be dumb, or something.
