Selecting Objects

I have a photograph of a coin:

..
I would like to change the background to blue like in this example:

.
I've tried using the bucket fill and experimenting with different
thresholds. I've tried using the different selection tools, but I
can't get a clean edge on the coin. Although I can easily tell where
the coin ends and the background begins, the software seems to have
difficulty differentiating between the two. Does anyone have any
suggestions short of meticulously painting in the background with a
brush under high magnification? I'd appreciate any shortcuts you could
offer. Thanks.
