By the time I get them to TIFF I'm done with the layers anyway.

Yes, precisely.  Well, not 100% perfect, but at least 2.2 could talk
to my
HP 8750 and I could get a reasonably accurate preview and print fine.

Sorry, don't know.  All I know is that 2.4.6 broke my printing in
Windows....
