In the process of learning what all those operations
do, I had a stab at the "Golden Text" tutorial at the GIMP
website
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Golden_Text/
I can get a nice environment (not any different from what is
shown) and the text part. But, when I get to the thrid step
in Part I, things are very different. I do
<Image>Filters -> Light and Shadow -> Lighting Effects
and set the parameters suggested, I can straight away
see in the preview window that what I am going to get
is very different than what is shown in the tutorial. What
I end up with is coloured text, with some shadings and
the text looks "flat" -- that it is, it looks like plain old
text with some washed out pattern on it, rather than
the very 3-d type of text shown in the tutorial.
I suspect that I am not getting the blurred text set
right. Any suggestions?
I did use the environment map and "self bumped'
it (used it to bump itself) and got an image that is
much more like I would expect to see -- dark
shadows and bright highlights with all kinds of
sinuous channels (almost like a topo map of a canyon!).
Blurring this gives the kind of thing that I would like to
see on the text, though not quite it.
Perhaps a short explanation of what the tool does
would be nice. Is there a place that I can find it?
thanks
JG
