Also ->Colors->Levels or ->Colors ->Curves using a selected channel in the
drop down selection of either of these tools allows you to adjust red,
blue, green or alpha channels.

Open the 'Colors' dialog and look at all the tools to see what can be
done... Opening all the 'Windows' of the 'Filter Pack' filter gives lots
of
options as well.. Once you learn a few of these tools you'll then
understand what those 'weird colors' are in the Hue-Saturation tool.
