Thanks. But I have found that using the Edit menu's "Copy"
and "Paste" work, though Ctrl-V seems to work fine across
image windows, layers, etc.

I have come a ways since the last note thanks to an excellent
tutorial on merging two images -- one of the things that I was
aiming to learn. It is worth keeping a local copy for newbies
like me! It can be found at

It, in fact, thought me about layers, anchoring, etc. in
one fell swoop. A great starting point, written to be
understood.

I notice that the fonts available in GIMP are similar to
those in Open Office, but the italicised versions are
often not available. Is there any reason that there isn't
a simple 'Italics' button as in most word processors?
