Today there are two versions of Gimp that are in wide spread use.  Gimp 
2.2 and Gimp 2.4 and soon to be Gimp 2.5.  In order to ask most 
questions it would be helpful to know what version you are using.

While I am not sure I think you can copy your selection to another layer 
and you will have that ****tion of the image alone.
