about blending modes... that was my first reply... blending can
be easily done in ImageMagick - but, this also somewhat answers
the "wish list" question... in fact, I inquired about this same thing
several years ago_ the reply I got suggested that Gimp is not
actively seeking to add duplicate procedures... I was already
using ImageMagick at the time, and that is what the developer
suggested as well.

try blending in ImageMagick.  If that is not what you want, there
is likely a way to do more what you do want... adjusting opacity /
transparency in individual layers IS blending as far as Im
concerned...
have you tried that ?
