     In GIMP, you can do the equivalent with both less waste and
more flexibility.

     Instead of saving the whole layer, you can save the Levels or
Curves parameters from within the Layers or Curves tool.  Then you
can open the file you saved it in.  An extra advantage is that you
can open that same set of parameters in a different image.
