Here is what I mean.

You create an adjustment Levels Layer and change some settings.

Then you create an adjustment Curves Layer and change some settings.

Now save the do***ent and close Gimp

At a future time you can then (You can do this with Photoshop) wishfully 
in Gimp, choose to edit the Curves Layer.  When you open for editing the 
settings that were last saved in the Curves dialog appear as they were 
before you clicked OK and you can make further changes starting with the 
last setting you changed.  Everything is there like it was.

You can do this with any of the adjustment layers.  It is real nice for 
if you have a Brightness Contrast layer saves and you test print just 
needs a little tweak you can edit the layer and make a fine adjustment 
to go forward.
