Each has different effects, but the opacity slider
adjusts how much the effect is done.

Personally I'm adamantly *against* using integral
printing "capabilities".

Whatever, I don't understand what you mean by "being
able to edit layers"?  The current layer is the only one
that is edited, and hence you can indeed edit each layer
separately.  Did you mean something else???
