Photoshop vs Gimp Adjustment Layers

I have used both Photoshop and Gimp.  I like Gimp because of lack of 
cost and it does many nice things.  PS is ahead in printing but I can 
make Gimp do the job.

The big difference is PS sup****ts subsequent editing of layers and they 
sup****t adjustment layers.  So far Gimp does not sup****t either.  Has 
anybody figured out a way to mimic adjustment layers in Gimp?

Lets say you have a stack of 4 layers:

Unsharp Mask
Curves
Layers
Background


I would like each layer to combine its thing with the layer below but 
not block the underlying layers.  The additive blending mode does not 
seem to do it the way adjustment layers does in PS.
