First, GIMP is a multi-platform program. Especially when
asking about installation, it's im****tant to tell us your
platform. We shouldn't have to look for subtle clues that you're
a Windows user.

The help is a separate download of an executable. It's
really not hard to start at the gimp.org site and get to
<http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html>.
 You probably got
there to download the GIMP, itself. Just a bit below are the
download links for the help.

Most tarballs are actually compressed TAR files. Try running
7-zip against the original and then against the result. I know I
used 7-zip to get Grokking. Or, the book is available from
multiple places; you could see if there's another one you can read
more easily.

Im****tant point: Grokking is a great book, but all of the
controls are for an obsolete version of the GIMP. So, use the
techniques, but remember that the actual keystrokes or menu
choices have changed.

If you're broadband, you should also check out the great a/v
tutorials at <http://meetthegimp.org>;
you should start with
episode one, which can be found on
<http://meetthegimp.org/getting-the-old-shows/>.
