If you want to start without spending money but want a high
quality package you should try out Blender.
Although it's unique UI has quite a
steep learning curve, you will never want to miss it again, once
you grasped the basic concepts.

The good thing about blender is, that it is a all-in-one package.
It contains a 3D modeller, physics simulation, (non linear)
animation, high quality renderer, compositing and sequence
editing (i.e. cutting, applying effects, transitions etc.) tools
in a single program.

Plus it's highly customizable and easily extandable by Python
scripting.
