Hi.. eag

You can switch between the shape and transform nodes of a selected
object by using the up/down arrow keys. Or with the Outliner open you can
select the transform or shape node of an object directly.

Maya has a lot of little interface quirks like this one. With the
Connection
Editor one click highlighting a selection and its active (with no OK,
Cancel).
Sometimes when trying to use the QWER keys to select a transform tool
will not work and you end up setting animation keys (your cap lock key
is on). 

Written tutorial are OK, but the shear scope of Maya requires a lot of 
training (how to use the interface) to be mostly intuitive. Digital Tutors
has a good introduction to Maya Video Set -that takes a slice thru most of
Maya's functionality.
