I bought Maya 8.5 about 3 months ago, it came with both 32 and 64 bit
versions

I looked into getting a new machine with Vista, but having setup 2 new
cheaper
Vista machines I decided to wait a couple of years. Vista lacks drivers,
some of
your old favorite programs will NOT run. You can: right click on the .exe,
select compatibility and try setting the mode to XP. This works some of
the
time.
The basic difference between a 32 and 64 bit machine is the total ram
available
for Maya. With the 64 bit version you can go over 4 gig but the cost of
ram is
still a bit too high. Always check out the max ram (sockets) for your
machine,
not many machines are designed to take advantage of the extra ram.
For a good look at 32/64 bit Maya compatible PC's check out Dell
workstations
for a mix and match personalized PC making sure that the video card you
select
is compatible with Maya. Three months ago Dell workstation ONLY had XP Pro
as an
OS, this may have change?
Basically (IMO) Vista still sucks, I spend too much time trying to get old
XP
programs working on Vista for family and friends. You can find the drivers
for
most programs but its too much work.
A lot of people have taken Vista out and installed XP but its getting hard
to
find copies of XP Pro in stores. In about a year and a half, Vista should
be
stable and easy to use, unfortunately most new machines are sold only with
Vista
and you become a microsoft beta testor.
Good Luck...
