As long as you can see and render your objects- the clipping planes aren't
that
critical. You can create special effects by manually controlling  the
clipping
planes but rendering in layers works better.

There's a good video tutorial "The Aesthetics of Cameras" by Cathy McInnis
(its
an Alias (Autodesk) tutorial), which among other facets shows how to
manually
use the near and far clipping planes to prevent jagged objects rendering
caused
by Maya's camera distance sorting problem. 
Its a very good basic cinematography tutorial, from basic Maya Camera
Controls,
to full tracking and zooming a camera to create a quality animation
sequence.
