In order to render Paint Effects in Mental Ray, you must first convert
your paint effects strokes to polys. You can do this by selecting your
stroke and going to
Modify > Convert > Paint Effects to Polygons

Textures and animation data from the paint effects strokes are carried
over to the poly mesh.
