Hi sal2

The torus should have at least 12 spans and 32 sections.
In PhotoShop:
1. Create a new file height and width= 512 x 512 (or any multiple up to
4096 ?)
-with square pixels, rgb color
2. Turn on: View ->Show -> Grid
3.. Turn on: View -> Snap to Grid
4. Select the "Line Tool" in your options window make sure that
"shape layer" or "fill pixel" is selected.
5. In the top right corner, right click and drag to the bottom left.
Install the other diagonal at the same time. Then install the
other diagonal lines at set grid intervals using the snap to grid
to keep the alignment.
6. Creating text in you model
Turn Off: View ->Snap to Grid
Each line of text is a separate layer and should be saved
as a psd file to alter or change.
7. Save as a jpg for maya and psd for changes.

Start with a simple 8 x 8 model and get it right first before tackling
your
final model.
The offset technique from the other reply also works with renumbering,
And with the old twisted torus model (isoparms are twisted diagonally) a
UV
mapped layout for each face is possible but would require a lot of Mind
Numbing
Work (up, down, right, and left get twisted when laying out UVs on a
torus). The
simple Photoshop seamless texture is the best method.
