Your S3 card is listed for Maya V2.5...

So its likely that your current version of Maya does not sup****t your S3
card.
OpenGL Version 2.0 is the latest hardware standard.  You can use your S3
card
but most or all of the video hardware acceleration is done by slow
software
emulation.

I had some "blocky" rendering in mental ray, not sure if its the same type
of
problem but.. You can try to override the Maya default parameters passed
to
mental ray.

Select your obj, then select:
Windows->rendering editors->mental ray->approximation editor
In the popup window:
 Select nurbs, poly or subD,?  and press Create...

In the attribute editor,
 Adjust the subdivision to a higher value and test render.
