Ok thanks everybody for the input.

For the moment I've decided just to limit myself to the 8 provided
lights but decide what is actually needed at run time and adjust them
as needed as the effects off all lights won't be visible at the same
time. This gives me a good enough compromise for the moment.. However
I can see in the future it would be necessary to replace the lighting
with my own custom code as suggested by Fungus.
