FBOs should have no speed impact at all. Actually they might be
even faster, since the GPU doesn't need to take interactions
with other image buffers into account.

If you experience some performance hit by solely rendering into a
FBO, then the problem is in the driver. However switching
between FBOs and/or the standard framebuffer may have some
impact.
