They are not exactly mistaken but...
Typefaces (design) still do not have copyright in US. They can be
protected by trademark but it is expensive. Fonts are protected just like
any other software, so you can't use the digital information like
character outlines. Freedom my ass!
So anyone can for example print, scan and autotrace a font legally. This
Park Avenue font, however, seems to be converted from Adobe's Type 1
version. Although the outline format is different the curves match
perfectly. I do not know how this font has been made, but legal or not I
never use 'free fonts'.
It is too common that people do not know fonts are licensed software and
cannot be distributed. Even some of my clients, who really should know
better, complain that I do not give fonts with do***ents. Some even say "I
always get the fonts from the designer" and they don't exactly like to be
reminded that they seemingly use fonts illegally.
