I am trying to get a Wacom UD-1212-R serial RS232 tablet running under SUSE
Linux 10.0 for a friend who used to use the tablet on an old Mac (G1 I
think), and would now like to use Gimp.
I have a few questions if anyone can help.
The stylus has been lost (model UP-201-00H) and so will need replacing.
Unfortunately the Wacom website disavows any knowledge of either the
tablet
or the stylus.
Q: Is the stylus necessary at all? It seems ordinary implements have no
effect.
Q: Can a more recent stylus be made to work, or should I hunt further for
an
exact replacement. If so, where?
Q: Does anyone know the operating principle of the stylus or have a
circuit
diagram (from which I might build a functional replacement)? I am
intrigued that a battery-free device can be sensed from 5mm above the
board.
Q: Does this mean the tablets emit a high intensity field of some sort to
energize the stylus?
Current status:
The tablet is 'alive' and responds to the driver initialization strings
with
details strings of its own e.g. model, vendor, ROM version etc., but is
dormant after that. I am guessing that the stylus is needed to prod
further activity from it.
I am unsure of my Linux configuration, but that is probably not an issue
to
canvas here.
Thanks for any ideas.
