Should work, though a secondhand serial ****t would also be really cheap.

6"×8" is a good size without being too small or too big.

The Intuos serial tablets have a bug that if you power down the computer 
without powering down the tablet, the tablet may not respond when the 
computer is restarted. Solution is to always power down the tablet too. 
Or it can be reenabled in the driver by turning it off then on again.
