For reasons known only to camera manufacturers every new sensor comes with
its own raw format, although the file extension (e.g. .nef for Nikon) may
remain the same.
There is not a technical reason why this needs to be.
Although Adobe is very good about adding software to its raw converter to
account for these changes in new camera models Adobe only sup****ts the raw
converter for its current version of Photoshop or Elements.
Adobe has offered its Digital Negative format as a universal raw format
but
few camera manufacturers have used it.
If you are adept at CS you will find the upgrade to CS3 worthwhile.
However
hopefully in CS4 Adobe will get its act together and get rid of the
converter altogether as a separate entity and unify all functions in the
Photoshop desktop. The converter was originally an emergency add-on to
deal
with the rapid rise of dSLR raw image capture and morphed into a poorly
do***ented, semi-crippled monstrosity that only allows unidirectional
image
processing.
