Hi, brand new user here. I'm wondering if Illustrator is the right
tool for the job I'm trying to get done. I have a bunch of data that I
need to get into a chart, and I want it to look great if possible. I
think what I'm looking for is something between a stacked column chart
and an area chart. The horizontal axis of the chart would be years (a
span of about 20). The vertical dimension would be a dollar amount.
The purpose of the chart would be to show the relative contributions
of several different companies to a common fund, which varies from
year to year. The somewhat unusual and distinctive feature of this
arrangement is that it is "ground-up," that is, one company may
contribute the first $1,000 in a given year, and in the same year
another company might contribute dollars $1,001 - $5,000, and so on.
It would be unusual to have more than 3 contributing companies in a
year. What this would end up looking like is a sort of combination
between a column chart and a bar chart.
So you might have a horizontal bar or block that represents Company
A's contribution of dollars 0-1,000 in years 1, 2 and 3, and then
stacked immediately above it, you might have two smaller blocks which
show that Company B is contributing dollars 1,0001-5,000 in year one,
and that Company C is contributing dollars $1,000-2,500 in years 2 and
3. Does this parse? The overall graph would show who contributed which
dollars to the big picture over the course of the entire lifespan of
the project - and it would look like a group of solid-color blocks,
some of which look like vertical columns, and some of which look like
horizontal bars.
I would draw a picture if I already knew how to draw a picture :-)
Does this sound like something for which Illustrator is suited? Thanks
*very* much for any input/feedback.
