Sorry about that -- was just trying to remember the "why" off the top of my
head -- here in my parts, we call it a "brain fart!" I get more than
enough
of those!! ;)
For your logo, first, please, please, please make sure that your photo
isn't
copyright protected!! You can get into a LOT of trouble tinkering with
copyrights. If it IS copyrighted, take a wander over to
http://www.istockphoto.com
-- there you can do a search using keywords
(wolves, castle, monkey, etc) to find the photo you'd need -- and you
don't
have to worry about copyrights. The images are good quality, inexpensive,
and you get them as soon as you can get'em downloaded!! ;)
Secondly, the best route, if you're going DIY, is to yes, modify the photo
in an image editing program. From there, if you have any vector elements
to
add (lines, circles -- anything that's not raster or pixels), you can do
it
in Illy. You can also add the taglines or any info you'd like there, too.
Don't do that in Photoshop (or whatever image editing app you're using)
because later, you'll have fits dealing with printers because of it!! Text
doesn't reproduce as well coming from image editing apps -- it won't be as
crisp or as clear if you decide to take your logo and put it on a banner,
side of a vehicle, billboard, etc.
Many here have advised you to use InDesign (or InDy, as many of us call
it)
for your business cards, letterheads, etc. And that's exactly right. It IS
the best application for such things. But if you don't have it, don't
sweat
it. Printers will usually accept files in AI (Illy's native format -- at
least one of it's native formats, really), EPS (another Illy format), PDF,
etc ... what matters is that you talk to your chosen printer and have him
tell you what formats you need, what specifications/requirements he has in
getting your piece printed.
And always, always, always, if you need ANY help, holler at us!! :)
